Duane's take
Here's how the official marker tells it, in my own words. Now, some stories come with clean dates and tidy beginnings, but the Midway Church of Christ isn't quite one of those. Records are scarce, as the saying goes, and all history can offer is a belief: that this congregation organized itself around 1854.
Right here in Madison County, Texas. Not a guarantee, mind you, just a strong and honest best guess passed down through the years. That's a humble way to start a story, and maybe that's fitting.
For a while, traveling preachers kept the congregation going, moving from place to place as preachers do. Then, in 1855, a man named Joseph Addison Clark arrived. Born in 1815, he would live until 1901, and he came to Midway as its first minister.
With Clark's arrival, the church had a name, a congregation, and a man to lead it. Many of those early members weren't just churchgoers. They were people who shaped Midway itself, shaped Madison County, left their fingerprints on the whole region's development.
And here's the part that deserves a pause. This church was already standing before the Civil War came through and changed everything. It watched that storm gather and pass.
The building has been enlarged over the years, remodeled when the congregation grew and needed more room, but the site has never changed. Same ground, all through its history. That kind of staying power, in a place where so much else shifted, is its own kind of testament.
The Midway Church of Christ has been part of the cultural history of Madison County for a long, long time, and it's still right here to prove it.
What the marker says
Midway Church of Christ Although records to establish the exact founding date of this church are scarce, it is believed the Midway Church of Christ was organized about 1854. Traveling preachers served the congregation until Joseph Addison Clark (1815-1901) arrived as first minister in 1855. Many of the church's early members were influential in the development of Midway and Madison County. The church has worshiped at this site throughout its history, although the building has been enlarged and remodeled over the years to accommodate the congregation's needs. Originating before the Civil War, the Midway Church of Christ has long played a role in the cultural history of Madison County. (2002)
