Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'll do my best to do it justice. Now, some stories start with a deed or a battle, something you can pin to a date on a calendar. But the story of Mt.

Calm Methodist Church starts softer than that. According to local tradition, this congregation first gathered in Mt. Calm, Limestone County, Texas, back in the 1850s.

No grand building. Just people, and a shared faith, and the kind of quiet determination that tends to outlast everything else. By 1862, a circuit preacher named Andrew Davis was holding services in a schoolroom inside the Mt.

Calm Masonic Lodge. Think about that for a moment. A borrowed room, a traveling preacher, a congregation finding its footing in the middle of the Civil War years.

That is not a small thing. Then the railroad came through. The Texas and St.

Louis Railroad had a way of redrawing the map wherever it went, and Mt. Calm was no exception. The town itself relocated to meet that railroad, crossing the county line into Hill County in the process.

And in 1883, this congregation erected a proper sanctuary in that new town. They had followed their community, and now they were putting down roots. Twenty-three years later, in 1906, they raised a new sanctuary.

And by 1910, the church had grown into something more than Sunday morning services. They were sponsoring a Sunday School and a Woman's Home Mission Society. This congregation was weaving itself into the fabric of daily life.

Then 1951 brought yet another new church building. The third, if you're keepin' count. Each one a statement.

Each one saying: we are still here. And the marker closes with the simplest line of all. The church continues to serve the local community.

No fanfare. Just a congregation that started in a borrowed schoolroom sometime in the 1850s and never once stopped showing up.
