Newton County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'll do my best to do it justice. This is Newton Cemetery, in Newton County, and it's one of those places that holds more history than it might first let on. The ground here has been in use since 1864, long before anyone drew up any official paperwork.

That first burial, the marker tells us, belongs to a landowner named G.W. Robinson, who laid his young son to rest here. Think about that for a moment.

Before this was a cemetery in any formal sense, it was a father's grief made permanent in the earth. That's where this story starts. Robinson himself would eventually pass away, and after he did, a Newton resident bought the land.

That resident later donated it for use as a burial ground, and in 1903 the cemetery was officially set aside to serve the town of Newton. So what began as one man's heartbreak became, in time, a gift to the whole community. The years kept coming, and so did the burials.

Many Newton citizens are interred here, and among them are veterans. Veterans of the Civil War, the First and Second World Wars, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. Generations of men and women who answered a call and then came home, or didn't, and found their rest in this corner of Newton County.

Since 1943, an association of concerned citizens has been caring for this graveyard, tending to it, preserving it, making sure those names and those stories don't get swallowed up by time. That kind of dedication doesn't make headlines, but it makes all the difference. Some places earn their history all at once.

Newton Cemetery earned its one quiet year at a time, going all the way back to a father and his son in 1864.
