Victoria County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, far as Duane can say. Now, 1887 was a good year to make a statement in Victoria, Texas, and somebody did exactly that. L.D.

Heaton built himself a home that year, and he didn't build it shy. The style is Southern Colonial, which means when you pull up to that place, the first things you see are lofty porch pillars reaching up like they have somewhere important to be, and a Georgian front entrance that says, plainly and without apology, that someone of standing lives here. The kind of architecture that makes a neighbor stand a little straighter just walking past.

Now, the man behind all this was no stranger to Victoria. L.D. Heaton was part of a prominent firm, J.C.

Heaton and Brothers, druggists, with operations here in Victoria and over in Cuero as well. A family enterprise, a name people knew, and apparently a business that rewarded a man well enough to put up pillars like that. The home stood as testament to both the era and the family that built it.

Southern Colonial columns, a Georgian entrance, 1887. Some things, you just build to last.
