Washington County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and here's how Duane tells it back to you. In Washington County, there stands a house that has been holdin' its ground since 1844. That is not a typo.

Eighteen forty-four. Built from native pine and sand brick, the kind of materials that don't apologize to anybody, this place went up when the Republic of Texas was barely a memory and statehood was still finding its footing. It stood.

It waited. And it had more story coming. Fast forward to 1875, when a man named T.

J. Pampell decided the old homestead needed a little something extra. Now T.

J. was not just any man with an opinion about architecture. He was a Civil War veteran. He owned a store.

And, because apparently that was not enough to keep him occupied, he also ran mule-drawn street cars. Mule-drawn. Street cars.

The man had range. And his taste in additions leaned toward the Hudson River style, that graceful front wing going onto the house like a formal handshake after decades of hard work. The Pampells and the Days made this place their own across three generations, the kind of continuity that turns a house into a homestead in the truest sense of the word.

By the time the marker found this place, it was owned by Mrs. Edwina Day Hallstein. Native pine, sand brick, a Hudson River wing, mule-drawn ambition, and three generations of people who knew a good thing when they had it.

Some houses just insist on mattering.
