Duane's take

The way the marker tells it, here's what happened in Brownsville, Texas. Back in the 1920s, North American corporations were developing Mexican oil fields, and that work created something nobody had fully reckoned with yet: a genuine need for reliable transportation into Mexico's interior. You couldn't just leave that problem sitting there.

And so, almost by the logic of necessity, Brownsville found itself stepping into a role that would put it on the map in a way most towns never get to experience. It became a pioneer training center for the craft of blind flying. Now, blind flying sounds like a dare, but what it means is piloting an aircraft entirely by the use of navigation instruments.

No horizon, no landmarks, just you and the gauges telling you what the sky is doing. In 1929, the Mexican division of Pan American Airways opened a school for exactly that kind of instrumentation flying, right there at the Brownsville Airport. They needed pilots who could trust their instruments when everything outside the cockpit went dark or featureless, and Brownsville was where those pilots were made.

The training course didn't stay contained for long. It was later extended to all divisions of the company. So what started as a response to the practical demands of oil country expanded into something the whole of Pan American Airways would come to rely on.

A little city on the southern tip of Texas, teaching the modern world how to fly blind.

What the marker says

The development of Mexican oil fields by North American corporations during the 1920s led to a need for reliable transportation into Mexico's interior. As a result, Brownsville soon became a pioneer training center for the now highly technical craft of blind flying, or piloting an aircraft by the use of navigation instruments. In 1929, the Mexican division of Pan American Airways opened a school for instrumentation flying at the Brownsville Airport. The training course was later extended to all divisions of the company.
