Duane's take

The marker's the word on this one, and here's how I'm tellin' it. Plaza de Carcel, y Casas de Correccion. Say that slowly and you get the translation right there in the title: Square of the Jail and Houses of Correction.

Now there's a piece of real estate with a reputation baked right into its name. This square was originally mapped in 1831, under the laws of Coahuila and Texas, which was at that time the northernmost state of Mexico. That's the world this plaza was born into.

Under those laws, prison sentences were to be worked out here. Not served in a cell somewhere, worked out. Right here on this square.

That's a certain kind of justice, standing in the open air of the northernmost reach of Mexico. But here's where the story takes a turn that only time can manage. By 1885, this same square, the one laid out for correction and confinement, had become part of the mercantile section of town.

Commerce moved in where consequence used to live. And the name, that heavy name, drifted eastward. The plaza to the east became the one they called Jail Square.

The original ground changed hands with history, the way ground in Texas tends to do, and left its old title behind like a sign that nobody bothered to take down.

What the marker says

(Square of the Jail and Houses of Correction) Originally mapped 1831, according to laws of "Coahuila and Texas", then the northernmost state of Mexico. Prison sentences were to be worked out here. By 1885, though, this square was in the mercantile section of town, and the plaza to the east became "Jail Square."
