Hill County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and here's how I'm gonna tell it to you. Way out in Hill County, there's a church that's been standing watch over the land for more than a hundred years, and the story of how it got there starts a long way from Texas. German immigrants, folks who'd first put down roots over in Washington County, started making their way to Hill County in the 1880s.

They were looking for something, the way people do, and they brought their faith with them like it was packed right there in the wagon. Now, picture this. It's June 6, 1886, and fifteen families, not fourteen, not sixteen, fifteen, come together with a shared purpose.

Out of that gathering, the Salem Lutheran Congregation was born. They didn't have a building yet. No walls, no roof, no bell.

What they had was the Rev. J. C.

Rieger riding in from West to hold worship services in people's homes. That takes something, doesn't it? A congregation fitting itself into parlors and kitchens, passing faith around like bread at a table.

When the first building was finally completed, Salem had a proper home. The community those fifteen families served, Salem community itself, turned out to be a forerunner of nearby Malone. The church outlasted its own address, so to speak.

And it kept going, leading the area's educational and religious development for over a century, carrying that rich German heritage of Hill County forward the whole time. Fifteen families. One preacher riding out of West.

And something that lasted. That's the Salem Lutheran Church.
