Duane's take

Here's my telling of what the official marker has to say, and I'll be straight with you, this one makes you lean in close just to hear it. Sam Callis Cemetery, Cooke County. Established 1867.

Now that's a year worth sitting with for a moment. Eighteen sixty-seven. The dust of a hard war still settling across Texas, and somebody, somewhere in Cooke County, was already thinking about the long future, already setting aside ground, already saying, this place matters, and it will go on mattering.

That's what a cemetery is, when you think about it. It's a community making a promise to itself. And this one has been keeping that promise since 1867.

The state of Texas recognized it as a Historic Texas Cemetery in 2007, which tells you the promise held. Some things in this world are built to last, and the Sam Callis Cemetery, standing quiet in Cooke County, is one of them.
