Duane's take

Here's my telling of what the official marker has to say, and I'll be honest with you, this one is short but it carries weight. San Pedro Cemetery. DeWitt County, Texas.

Established 1920. Now, some stories come at you like a river in flood, names and dates and deeds tumbling over each other, fighting for your attention. And then there are stories like this one.

Quiet. Still. The kind that make you slow down on a back road and take a breath.

San Pedro Cemetery was established in 1920. That's what we know. That's what the marker tells us.

And sometimes, the most important thing a place can do is simply exist, year after year, keeping its ground, holding its purpose, while everything around it changes. Designated a Historic Texas Cemetery in 2012, this place had already been doing what cemeteries do best for over nine decades before anyone put a name on a marker. Remembering.

Persisting. Bearing witness. Some of the most powerful places in Texas don't announce themselves with long histories or famous names.

They just stand there, patient, in the quiet of DeWitt County, and they endure. San Pedro Cemetery has been doing exactly that since 1920, and if that's not a Texas story, I don't know what is.
