Well, here's my telling of what the official marker has to say about this particular patch of Johnson County ground. Now, picture a spot that had two things every Texan has always understood to be non-negotiable: wood and water. Simple as that, and yet those two things made all the difference.

After 1854, when Camp Henderson got its start (named, the marker tells us, for the land owner and townsite donor who gave the place its foundation), this ground became the site for decisive public meetings. Not casual gatherings. Decisive ones.

The kind where men showed up knowing something was going to get settled before they went home. And sure enough, things did get settled. In 1867, Camp Henderson became the county seat.

That's a moment right there. A community planting its flag, saying: this is the center of things. But the story doesn't stop there; not by a long shot.

Because at some point, at a Fourth of July picnic right here on these very grounds, the men gathered under whatever shade those old trees offered, probably with the smell of wood smoke in the air and the sounds of a Texas summer all around them, and they named the town. They called it Cleburne. Named it for a Civil War commander (a man, the marker notes, who had led many of the local veterans standing right there in that crowd).

Think about that. The men who had served under him, who had followed him through whatever the war had put in front of them, now stood on a peaceful patch of ground with wood and water and the Fourth of July around them, and they gave that commander's name to the place they were building. That's the kind of thing that sticks.
