Duane's take
Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'll pass it along just the same. March of 1836. Texas is a powder keg, and one division of General Santa Anna's army is on the move.
This particular column fell under the command of General Joaquín Ramírez y Sesma, and from March twentieth through the twenty-sixth of that year, this is where they made their camp. Right here. Six days they held this ground.
Then that division crossed the Colorado River at Atascosita Ford, eight miles below Columbus, and kept on going. That's the whole of it, and sometimes the whole of it is enough. A general, a division, six days, and a river crossing.
The kind of thing that can change everything depending on what comes next.
