Duane's take
The way the marker tells it, here's what you need to know about Val Verde County. Formed from three others, Crockett, Kinney, and Pecos counties, this place came into being fast. Created on March 24, 1885, and organized just one week later on March 31, 1885.
Now that is a county that hit the ground runnin'. But the name, the name carries something weightier than a week's worth of paperwork. Val Verde County is named in honor of the battle fought at Val Verde, near Fort Craig, New Mexico, on February 19, 1862.
A battle serious enough, significant enough, that decades later when Texans drew new lines on a map, they reached back to that February day and said, this place deserves to carry that name forward. Del Rio serves as the county seat, anchoring a county born quick and named for blood. That is Val Verde County.
