Duane's take
The way the marker in Victoria County tells it, here's the story of a man who made sure the past didn't just blow away with the wind. Victor Marion Rose. Poet, editor, historian, and soldier.
Four words, and every one of them earned. He was born right there in Victoria on January 1, 1844, which means he came into the world on the very first breath of a new year. Make of that what you will.
Now, Victoria was already a place with stories layered deep by the time Victor Rose came along, and those stories had a way of scattering, the way old paper does, the way memory does, if nobody takes the trouble to gather them up. Rose took that trouble. He went to the founders of Victoria themselves and collected the fragments of the past, the pieces that might otherwise have been lost for good, and he wove them into the history of Victoria County.
Wove them. That's not an accident of language. That's a poet doing a historian's work.
And he was both. He was a soldier too, and an editor besides, a man who clearly could not sit still when there was something worth doing. Victor Marion Rose died in Myrtle Springs on February 5, 1893.
But the history he wove out of those fragments, well, that's still holding together.
