Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'm just the one passin' it along. William Moten Vaughan. Born in Missouri on October 15, 1841, and that birth date alone should tell you something, because a man born in 1841 was going to come of age right in the middle of everything this country was about to put itself through.

He came to Texas young enough to ride with the Texas Rangers, serving from 1860 to 1861. Think about that timing. The Rangers, then the war.

No gap, no breath, just one chapter closing and a harder one opening. When the Civil War came, Vaughan was in it from 1862 to 1865. And here is the part that sticks.

He was a corporal, and he served in the last Confederate army surrendered east of the Mississippi. The very last. Long after the news had traveled, long after other men had laid their arms down and started walking home, Vaughan was still in it.

That is not a footnote. That is the end of something enormous, and he was standing right there when it ended. After the war, he made his way through Texas, McLennan County, then Coryell County, then out to Briscoe County, where this marker stands.

He married twice. He had eleven children. He lived until March 15, 1928.

A man born before the war, who rode for the Rangers, who was present at the final surrender, who then just kept on living, raising children, moving west, watching the whole twentieth century begin to stir around him. Some stories don't need embellishing. They just need tellin'.
