Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'll do my best to do it justice. Way out in Jasper County, there's a spot where a town once stood. A real town, with a name, a purpose, and for a good while, a future.

The marker calls it the Site of the Town of Zavala, and that word, site, does a lot of heavy lifting. It tells you right away that something came and went. But let's not get ahead of ourselves.

The land itself has a story first. It was included in an empresario grant in 1829, given to a man named Lorenzo de Zavala, and when a town eventually took shape on that land, it carried his name into the years ahead. That's the kind of honor that gets carved into maps and marker stone both.

Now this wasn't just a quiet patch of riverbank sitting idle. Zavala was an early boat landing. Think about what that means out here, before roads were roads and before the railroad had a say in things.

If your goods were moving, if news was traveling, if you needed to get somewhere, the water was the highway, and Zavala was a stop on it. It was also a mail and stage station, which means it was a place people were expecting, a place on the route, a dot on the plan. By 1838 it was incorporated.

An actual town, recognized, official, on the books. And it kept a post office running all the way through to the Civil War. Letters came and went.

Names were written down. People were somewhere, and they wanted the world to know it. Then the Civil War came, and after it, the post office didn't.

The town of Zavala faded into the land that had once been granted to the man it was named for. What remains is the site. The State of Texas erected this marker in 1936, making sure at least the memory stays put.
